A wide-range of surviving artefacts offers a
valuable insight to life at Rievaulx during its four-hundred year
history. A number of these are on display in the visitors’ centre
at the site and include floor tiles, seals, pens, chess pieces,
buckles and even a scourge.
The abbey ruins at Rievaulx are amongst the most significant
in Britain. Recent architectural analysis of Rievaulx means
that the
layout of the precinct and the stages of building are more clearly
understood, and the site is now appreciated as much for its architectural
importance as its aesthetic qualities. (10)
