William Thirsk, abbot of Fountains (1526-36)

William was forced to resign from office amidst allegations of misconduct and poor administration; the royal commissioners branded him a fool and an idiot. He retired to Jervaulx, but became involved in the Pilgrimage of Grace and was hanged for his participation.
