John Ripon, abbot of Fountains 1416-34 He was a man most worthy of praise and pious
remembrance, helpful John Ripon had officiated as cellarer of Fountains and was later promoted to the abbacy of Meaux, Fountains’ daughter-house in Holderness. He was a candidate for the abbacy of Fountains, following the death of Robert Burley in 1410. He contested the appointment of Roger Frank and, after a long, expensive and violent tussle, was installed as the legitimate abbot of Fountains. John died in March 1434 and was buried in the nave of the abbey church at Fountains, before the entrance to the choir.(2) [Read more about the tussle for the abbacy] |
