18th-century Artists' Impressions of Kirkstall Abbey

(2/9 )

back

Black and white photograph on glass slide showing John Bouttats' oil painting of the west range of Kirkstall Abbey in 1738. In this painting the tower is intact, part of the laybrothers' building is still standing and the old laybrothers' reredorter appears to be inhabited. This and two other oil paintings originally made a set and have been discussed in detail by Peter Brears (1998) 'Prospects of Kirkstall Abbey Ano Dom 1738', Leeds Museums and Galleries Review 1, 5-7
