Mother-house

An abbey which founded another Cistercian community (its daughter-house) was known as the mother-house; for example, Fountains Abbey established Newminster Abbey, and was therefore its mother-house, while the abbot of Fountains was the Father Abbot. Newminster was a daughter-house of Fountains.
