2. The late thirteenth-century ‘Account Book of Beaulieu Abbey’ states that the porter of the house was to lodge thirteen poor folk each night, and also several others as the abbot’s guests. On feasts the number of poor admitted equalled the number of monks in the community; on Maundy Thursday each received a penny, C.
