Work

The Cistercians were renowned for their commitment to manual work, which they reinstated as a central part of the monastic day. In the early days, the monks and lay-brothers would also have worked together to construct the necessary buildings, barns and fences, and also to cultivate the land and harvest the crops. The following images illustrate the Cistercians at work and also show artefacts such as tools and building materials.
