Robert of Pipewell, abbot of Fountains 1170-80

For nine years he ruled the monastery of Fountains, showing himself kindly to all, beloved by all and himself loving the whole world.
['The foundation history of Fountains' (Narratio) in A. Oxford, The Ruins of Fountains Abbey, p.214]

Robert presided as abbot of Pipewell, a daughter-house of Fountains, and was then promoted to lead the community at Fountains. He held this office until his death at Woburn Abbey, on his return journey from the General Chapter. Robert’s body was returned to Fountains and buried in the chapter-house.
