John had at one time officiated as cellarer of Fountains. He was an active and popular abbot of Fountains, who made an important contribution to building and renovation work at the abbey. John also played an important role in the affairs of the General Chapter in England. He was greatly admired by his contemporaries, and his reputation helped secure Fountains’ prominence as the leading abbey in the North of England.
