'aged, devout, and strenuous in matters
human and divine.' (1)
Geoffrey of Ainai, a monk of Clairvaux, was
sent by Bernard to instruct the new
Cistercian community of Fountains in the ways of the Order. He
taught them how to celebrate the Offices,
and advised them on the layout of their buildings, their clothing
and diet. Geoffrey had evidently visited a number of communities
to offer instruction, and thereby ensure uniformity of practice
within the Cistercian family.
