In the fifteenth century a malthouse was built in the southern range, next to the kitchen. With the decreased number of lay-brothers and the subsequent shortage of labour at this time it was probably necessary to have a malthouse nearer at hand. A great round vat can be seen to the south of the malthouse and excavation of the site uncovered fragments of three-handled pitchers. Each pitcher held about 3 & 1/2 gallons of ale and had a tap in the bung-hole near the base from which the ale was drawn.
