A wooden clapper that was sounded by the prior
to summon the monks to eat, wash or attend a meeting. This wooden
board hung outside the chapter-house and was struck with a mallet.
The tabula was also used during the Easter period when no
bells were allowed to be rung. If one of the community was about
to die the tabula was sounded continually to call the brethren
to gather around the dying man. The communitys notice-board
that hung in the east gallery of the cloister was also called a
tabula.
